Context Clues

Description: a classroom-based active learning strategy where students are encouraged to build on their knowledge about a topic or content to promote higher-order thinking, interaction and cooperative learning.

Purpose: I would use context clues to help students understand unfamiliar words or phrases. A way to do this is by examining an unfamiliar word through the text information surrounding that word.

Concept Map

Description: A visual representation showing the relationships between ideas.

Purpose: I would use this strategy to teach comprehension- the student can connect between a main idea and supplimentary ideas (e.g., developing a main idea and supporting ideas).

Semantic Feature Analysis

Description: is a strategy to teach students how to understand the meaning of the words and phrases contained within a text to understand it.

Purpose: I would use a semantic feature analysis when a student has difficulty accessing the specific word or label they want to say. Training typically involves auditory and visual cueing to facilitate provision of particular pieces of information.

Frayer Model

Description: A frayer model (a graphic representation showing definition, picture, example and non-examples) can be used across all disciplines- it will truly help students to learn, know, and remember their vocabulary.

Purpose: I would use this strategy teach students vocabulary.
