Teacher candidates in California will apply knowledge, strengths, social-emotional learning, and prior experiences, interests from students to engage and motivate students. Teachers will execute ongoing communication with students and families (including technology such as emails and virtual spaces). Furthermore, the subject matter should be presented by the beginning teacher relevant to the student and real-life contexts and provide active learning (and critical thinking) experiences to foster and engage student interest, motivation and extend learning. To further engage students, teacher candidates understand the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for students to access curriculum for a wide range of learners. The beginning teacher candidate should monitor student learning consistently and frequently to adapt and adjust instruction to keep students actively engaged.

Ed Specialist teacher candidates will be able to apply knowledge of students (prior experiences, interests, social-emotional learning needs), including their culture, language, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to engage them in learning. IEP (Individualized Education Programs) are to be developed by the teacher candidate and collaboratively with the rest of the IEP team with goals aligned closely with the Common Core State Standards that support students and an inclusive environment with disabilities. ITP (Individual Transition Plan) is to be developed with students and their families, which centers around student strengths, aspirations and shows strong connectedness for life beyond high school. Teachers will demonstrate knowledge of students' learning development and monitor progress towards learning goals. EdSpecialist Teacher candidates will facilitate and support students in increasing their responsibility for their positive socio-emotional development, goals, and strategies.

Demonstrate knowledge of students’ language development across disabilities and the life span, including typical and atypical language development, communication skills, social pragmatics, the hierarchy of brain based learning skills (e.g. executive functioning) and vocabulary/semantic development as they relate to the acquisition of academic knowledge and skills.
Demonstrate the ability to develop IEPs/ITPs with students and their families, including goals for independent living, post-secondary education, and careers, with appropriate connections between the school curriculum and life beyond high school.
